How do lenders earn money originating your loan?

Mortgage companies are compensated two ways:

1) We earn compensation by offering a retail interest rate.  In other words, we profit by charging you a rate higher than we receive.

2) By charging the borrower an origination fee.  This can range from 1%-5% depending on the the interest rate charged.

So how does a borrower get the
